Hello, So i was wondering how i build a website with WordPress. DO i have to have a web host and domain name to build a website on WordPress or is there a way i can build my website first and then upload it to my web host after my website is done, is that possible? Thanks in advanced Preston
This should help you get started without having to get hosting set up first: http://codex.wordpress.org/Test_Driving_WordPress#Installing_WordPress_on_Your_Windows_Desktop
You can sign up for a WP account for free and build a website just using wordpress servers. However buying a domain name first means that your contnet will only be in one place - rather than needing to transfer when you buy a domain name. Using WP with a domain name is pretty simple so do it that way even if it costs you a little extra to begin with
If you want to completely build your website before uploading it, you'll need to install Apache (or any other web server) and MySQL server onto your PC so you can access Word Press when it's running on your PC.
I would suggest buying cheap .info domain name and sign up for free hosting account, if you want. Use them to test things out.
Yes. Just copy your files/database and move them, changing the settings to match your web hosting server: http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress#Moving_WordPress_to_a_New_Server
Get a host & a domain. Download the latest version of Wordpress (v3.3) at http://wordpress.org/ and install it.
I agree with this. You can use a free web host like e.g. freehostia.com and test your website first. Also, you can register a .info domain for just $1.99 with e.g. GoDaddy.com. Then when you test things out, you can buy a decent hosting and a .com domain.
its not mandatory that you should have a domain you can create a WordPress blog create your site and then host it
If you are building a wordpress site - I wouldnt bother building it on your own computer first and then uploading it - this creates a lot of extra steps that aren't really needed. Is there a reason why you would want to do it this way?
You can customize your blog and set the privacy in the wp dashboard to not allow any search engines to see it until you are ready. this way you can make all the changes you want and only you can see them.
if you are new to wordpress and dont know how to use it, before investing money on domain and hosting; get WAMP Server - its a free server app intregated with php and mysql.. install it on your computer, dowload latest version of wordpress from wordpress.org, and set it up on the wamp server, and test everything out, play with it, learn the basics... and when ready go for domain and hosting and have your own website.... good luck.
If you get a site through WordPress you will not be able to design the theme, you have to use one of their designs. To do what you would like you need to have a self hosted WordPress Site so you can upload themes.
It depends on your needs. By having a self hosted Wordpress project may cost some money, but what you have there is full liberty
Sounds like you haven't done any website design or building. For a new website, there is absolutely no reason to build it someplace else and then upload it onto your domain and hosting. No one will ever know that you are building a website there. AND, once you install Wordpress on your host and domain, you can simply install a Maintenance Screen plug in, to prevent anyone from seeing what you are doing. AND, you can also block search engines from crawling it in the settings until you are ready to make it live. Also, moving Wordpress is something you learn after you know how to build Wordpress. Trying to build it in one place and then move it somewhere else is really just complicating things and will take you twice as long to learn. And things will function a lot easier if you just build it where it's supposed to be. A LOT EASIER. Especially for someone who has never done it before. Get the basics first. You have far more important things to worry about such as getting yourself set up to even use WP in the first place and learning how to use it.
