Building a Quiet PC

So I eventually got fed up listening to the racket my old PC made and decided to build a quieter one.

The key components as far as keeping the noise down are:

    Soundproofed case
    Quiet power unit
    Quiet CPU fan

The CPU fan needs a reasonably up to date motherboard as it's a bit of a beast and weighs about a kilo so a newer MB is needed for the mounting system.

The difference between my old PC and the new, quiet one, is like comparing the noise an electric car makes against a truck.

What about a decent water cooled system? You won't hear a peek.

My brother recently built a new system because he required more power for gaming, and programming and what not and it works perfectly. You have to get real close to even hear a tiny sound.

I looked at those but I wasn't keen on water being in my computer. Too afraid of a disaster.

Unless you're an idiot, disaster is very rare with water cooled systems =] Only disadvantage is that it can be quite costly compared to a standard fan.

Can't you get a replacement fan?

It wasn't just the water-in-the-computer part that concerned me about water-cooled systems - it was the requirement to remember to top up the fluid on some of the systems I looked at that troubled me. That, and it was 3x the price, of course.

Edit: here's my PC during the build (still a few components to go in)

I'm running a mac, and when Mac had a watercooled dual G5 system I bought one, it's whisper quiet. It lasted me 3 years without having to top up any coolant. Just go with someone who's experienced with rigging water cooling systems up and you should be good. I just wish they had water cooled systems for the newer macs. My current Octo core is pretty quiet though..

3 years, huh? That's pretty interesting to know. I thought I'd be checking the water levels every few weeks then getting paranoid about it and doing it all the time, then not bothering until smoke started coming out. :)

Octo core? As in, 8x processor? I thought hex was the pinnacle of processors at the moment and I got a shock when I checked processors and found there was such a thing as a hex core lol.

Ah, fair point. That is a big job as far as computers go.

I think using that water system in pc is very dangerous heat sink enough for heat control.

I also don't use water cooling and my PC has almost no noise. The loudest part is the HDD :)

    Used:
Semi passive PSU: NorthQ and Enermax has some models
    Passive VGA
    Controlled CPU Fan
Low noise HDD with vibration damper

It is a 4core workstation and not a hard core gamer PC :)
