Is it ok to build a niche site using .INFO domains? What are the advantage and disadvanatages?

I think the only advantage of using .info is that they are cheap and you may get the name that you want.

The disadvantage is that because so many hundreds of thousands of .infos have been sold so cheap and now are home to the classic "thin affiliate site" that google can take a lot of convincing to properly spider and index your site.

for the sake of around $8/9 per year it would make sense to go with .com. $8/9 per year is just peanuts at the end of the day.

I would recommend that you avoid .info unless you have specific users. They don't get good rankings in the search engines after all they are intended as information sites for people to use to sahe information usually of an association or group. I have tried both and didn't get anywhere near the .cpm results when I used .info.

They were cheap though for the first year

Agreed - if you are serious about the site then you will get a .com. It's as low as $7.99 a year, and you ought to be covering that cost with the site, or why bother!

Google is definitely leery of .info sites, I would avoid like the plague, though I have a few myself :/

There are rumors speculating that the Big G does not like .info, though nobody can be sure of this.

To be safe, it's better to invest more to buy a .com domain.

I had used both .info and .com domains and in my opinion you should go for .com . Though I might not prove you but from my experience .com is more trusted and easier to rank than info. Another aspect is lets say you create a niche site and it is a hit. It would be lot better if you had the .com in the first place.

Always go for a .com or at the very least a .net, but I would avoid .info at all costs. It's cheap for a reason.

Yep ^^^^^ Stay AWAY from anything not .com! Possibly .net, but I only use .com's period!

I have good success with .org though.

I suspect that's because visitors in my niche think .org has some credibility.

IMO, if you are doing an affiliate marketing, it is better to have a .com site for it is a commercial site. People trust .com other than .info sites. But in issue of ranking on search engines, I think it does not matter if you have a .com or .info as long as you know how to optimize your site.

I've had 3 .info domains dropped from Google search since the last page ranking session. They were bans + wordpress sites. The more I read these days, the less I would invest in any more .info domains.

well if you have good ranking with .info site, don't fix it unless it's broken, but be sure to buy .com domain next time.

Definitely a .com if you can afford it. Nothing wrong with testing/starting out in .info but ideally you want to be using .com or .nets as already mentioned.

For long-term planning and result, go for .com domain. .info is synonymous with SPAM. Your .com investment is worth it.

hey don't worry about it, there's no evidence that Google will ban .info domain altogether.

I've seen .info site that ranks well.

What we are discussing here is, if you are buyin a new domain, always go for .com

Lots of .info sites rank well in the search engines, I don`t agree with the fact that google penalizes info domains, is there any proof ?

There's no proof really, but generally it's good to stick to .com domain.

Thank you all for your advice, this will really help me alot. I think I should really go for the .com, but I will still optimize some of my .info domains so they won't be wasted. Thanks!
