Building a high traffic website like "Youtube"

Okay, I'm thinking of building a website which will require a lot of traffic not as much as youtube or popular. It will be good/useful for certain groups of people.

My question is that which webhosting do you think I should go for?

I don't think the website will have much traffic for a while though.

    Traffic:
It's basically a website that includes a lot of videos/gallery and a forum.
Probably 5000+ users easy in the future i'm hoping.
I could start with a normal hosting service like Lunarpages' 20GB HD space/400GB traffic/$10-m.

Will there be much hussle shifting all the files to the other host in the future?

I heard that dreamhost has some issues with the amount of processor usage.. they might disable the a/c due to this..
A dedicated server is always better..

On Mid end, one may consider hosting in Godaddy as well.. starting from 3.99 / m for 5GB hosting with 250GB transfer.

If you really want to make a site as big as YouTube... then you will be needing multiple dedis.

Anyways, I am using crucialp.com dedi server, pretty good so far.

Hostgator is good, but you should know that they charge a one-time $10 fee to upgrade or downgrade your account. $10 isn't much, but it annoys me that they charge for something other people do for free. Otherwise, they seem to be okay so far...

    Thanks for inputs guys.

Wait a minute, for those who have a dedicated server. Those plans have "1000GB Bandwidth", which is not much at all. What happens you use extra such as 100,000GB bandwidth?
Obviously big sites consume a lot of traffic... especially video/gallery sites.

you'll also need a PR agency...

i'd think about getting traffic first, then dealing with it. myspace is slow as hell but people still use it.

you should go for some hosting that provides a CP which you would prefer. Most hosting companies like HostGator do not provide cPanel. Be sure to check before you choose ur web host.

Well there really isn't an actual limit on bandwidth if you get a dedicated server. You just sort of set a number so you'll know to stay under so you don't push your server too hard.

Thanks Jack, but thse plans say "1,000GB bandwidth". Is it okay for me to say 'I want 200GB traffic!/month'. Will the price differ? by how much roughly?

The price will be based more on what kind of server you buy rather than what is offered. As I said, there really isn't a set ceiling, it's just how much work your server can handle.

Email a few places like Defenderhosting, The Planet, EV1 and ask them how much they can offer you and how much are the overages for bandwidth. Some are fairly reasonable. Just make sure you are aware of the fee's before you go over :)
