    Hi there,

    let's say you're building a directory.

Now on a topic "Travel" you also want to list some "Shopping" site related to this topic (travel books for sale, book airline tickets, hotels, etc...)

You're strongly don't want your visitors to feel like they're at the mall. You want to give a good information and also add shopping site. Am I right ? ( that's what I would like )

What will be the best to do...

List shopping sites that related to travel under main "Online Shopping" category. ?
    or
List the sites as a sponsors links?
    or either
List the sites as normal under the Travel category (try to mix them with other sites).
    or
List the site as sub-category to the main one "Travel".

What's your opinion? Would you do it total different? any other way? hope to what you all got to say ;)

Most directory scripts have a "symbolic category" or "virtual category" function. So, you can keep the shopping categories in the shopping section, and then list them as "related categories" under travel as well.

We have a travel script that we have used for over 6 years that is different to the excellent phpld and does not in anyway compete with directory scripts but it does focus 100% on travel you can PM us for more information

However if you want a broad based directory script with width and reach to spread across multiple categories then the excellent phpld script is the type of application that you should consider as it has an established client base and is very innovative with excellent back up support

    Why not create subcategories?

    Destinations, Travel Agents, etc.

Make sure that you know your competitors well and their mistakes as well you know what I mean? If you creating something, dont make the same mistake as most of the people make, by creating almost the same clone...ask yourself how you will be different from other that kind of directories?
