    Hi Guys,

I started my first web directory, I have been building links for websites but I wanted to know if there a different strategy when building links for a directory. I thought may be I would be able to get lot of reciprocal links from directories but it didn't work because they want links on the home page whereas I want to only provide links on the relavant category pages.

    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Screw the link exchange crap.... Too much time involved with doing this technique and it doesn't always go your way. Which in turn is a waste of time.

Write articles and submit them all over the place. Throw in a few Press Releases as well.

Like geester1 said too - blog commenting is a great way to get backlinks and increase your traffic... And that's organic traffic

Blog commenting is a great option. But also, try and get your directory listed in the DODs (directory of directories) out there. These can yield a great deal of relevant traffic. After you start receiving traffic, it all rests on you whether you want to make it any other directory or a good quality one. Moderate links carefully and maintain good standards in the process.

Look for other good directories in your niches and exchange links with them. Outlink also to the authority directories like DMOZ, Yahoo, etc. The links you give and where they point to are important in Google's eyes. As for the rest, make sure you do good internal linking and submit articles, press releases etc as said, SY

IF your directory's all category pages are blank, you will not get any profit. Put some links on all pages, or accept all request in related category. Secondly, if someone requires his/her link on your Home page, then i don't see any problem at all. You also have right to get home page link in return.

Right point. Try submitting it to DODs, like Directory Trends.
