Build a coupon site with WordPress? Is it practical/possible?

Does it look like RetailMeNot.com is running on WordPress? Is it possible to build something similar using WordPress plugins? They advertise thousands of coupons that are updated daily (which is overwhelming to input manually). I'm wondering if they are updated through some automatic feed? Or are there employees that manually enter the details of each coupon code or sale (this is tedious)? Also, when you click on a coupon code, it opens the merchant's website for you. Are there WordPress plugins that can achieve the same functionality of this website in particular?

Yes it is really possible. You can make use of custom fields to share coupon codes. They are really powerful.

You can do it on wordpress but it's not the best solution for a coupon site. The problem is that they don't have automatic import for feeds.
Now if you pay monthly for coupons ( that are offered free by affiliates network ) you can resolve this problem. But it's not so cheap as you might think.
You can take a look here http://www.couponsitescript.com/ for automatic import of coupon / deals.
Yes Retailmenot has some employes but more important a lot of traffic that actually place coupons for stores. That won't happen so fast for a new coupon site.

As others have mentioned, yes it's possible. There are some great coupon themes out there. However, the problem you'd have is 1) competition (there are thousands of others already doing this) and 2) a lot of affiliate programs won't offer you full commission if you run a coupon site (read their TOS before diving in),, usually it's 2% and terms state you can only post the coupons they give you.

Possible but don't think on wordpress. Sure you can make a coupon site using wordpress. No, I did not see feeds for wordpress to import automatically. That means that you have little chance to make in this industry. You have to consider the fact that not only you have to do the input but also delete the coupons.

Also there are some feed to import coupons but most of them are paid/monthly - from 5$ up to hundreds.

I use the script from http://www.couponsitescript.com/ and I have the option to import the coupon automatically, directly from the affiliate networks, which offers the coupons and deals for free. I can import more then 1000+ coupons per day.

Anything is possible, I got up to 10k per month in 6 months, 3 months of baclklinking and branding and 3 months of waiting, I was actually surprised when I started seeing sales. But that is right when Google started their Penguin, Panda updates which took out the little man. I was able to rank on 3rd page for coupon codes. It is I would say 50 times harder to rank a coupon site since april 2012

Yes it is. If user wants complete coupon site, you can use the Clipper theme. http://demos.appthemes.com/clipper/ This theme gives complete coupon theme functionality.
For aggregation (updating coupons regularly ), you can write a plugin which will run based on, wordpress cron job. You can also set up a wordpress cron job, to delete expired coupons automatically. This facility is not provided in clipper theme.

Wordpress plugin will need API to fetch new coupon & store details. This can be extracted from API and can be stored. This will allow auto update regularly. Here's an article with some more details.

I just checked the HTML Coding for that Website and I also did some other stuff to check it that site is using the WordPRess Platform.

They are not. That Coupon Site is actually built on pure HTML Coding.

It looks like they are not using any Platform.

You can tell by going to the blog section > click on a post and you can see each URL has the .html at the end.

That's just one sign. And when you look at their pages source - you cant find any WP/WordPress words in it. You can check this on Mozilla Firefox by pressing Ctrl + U

Also, this site is ranking number 418 in the world and 122 in the USA. This is very very good rankings and this tells us that this site is really really popular - so that means they are BIG.

This could mean that they have employees and a lot of people working for the website.

This is pretty much what I can tell you about the site retailmenot.com

    Hope this helps! ..

I wish you much success online!

    Cheers!
