just thought i would mention it....

i have noticed a lot of sites that do not have a 404 page
and simply have an error page,
thats a lot of traffic you could be missing.

Do you really think people will bother trying to find their location in that haystack of links?

When I worked for fortunecity.com back at the turn of the century, thier 404 page was thier greatest money spinner! :)

I'm lazy, so I just edit httpd.conf to redirect the user back to the index page.

    ErrorDocument 404 /index.shtml

    Code (markup):

Fortunecity was big on giving away free web space. By a combination of user crapness and people putting up content which we then deleted (dubious content, or spammers) the 404 page was served up a ludicrous amount of times daily. The 404 page then came up explaining that the page could not be found and served up some adverts. Simple.

I just checked and thier 404 page now just comes up blank. Idiots. Still, it was nice of them to relocate me from the UK to an office a few blocks north of Times Sq in NYC :)

    Cheers

Did you?!? I just went there and it was a blank page. I don't know if that's the idea. I don't work there any more (haven't done for 5 years). I apologise for you seeing whatever it was you saw...

    Idiots

Here is a script I've seen for dynamic error pages.
