Build 1000 page site or Affiliate market?

    Mahalo,

am just getting around to an idea I've had for a while for a site, and have just discovered how to develop 800-1000 pages of very good content quite quickly (2 months). The idea is to cook this site over 5-10+ yrs, monetize with Adsense and banners.

YET! After reading quite a bit of the affiliate & PPC threads, maybe my energy/time is better spent on direct affiliate sales. (though I am a novice at this for the meantime)

What are some opinions as to which plan is more lucrative in the long run?

    Chris

I'm just starting myself but I have done a lot of reading, and what I've found would suggest that direct marketing is where most people make their money (and a lot of it in some cases), but the downside is that it's not quite fully residual. If you stop working the money stops coming in. On the other hand you could do what you are talking about in building a quality site and letting it grow through search engine rankings, which will make you much less money to begin with but will be more reliable and require less maintenance over the long haul.

Exactly. I think I'll focus on direct affiliate marketing for the immediate term and work in the larger site project over the next year. I think in this industry, diversifying in every aspect is key.

i was working on long term based projects for the last one year..
just made the switch to affiliate marketing last month.. and i am shocked and pleased with how less effort is required to get so much ROI.

i would stick with affiliate marketing for now..

We say, don't put all eggs in one basket. I would mainly concentrate in affiliate marketing. when someday a great idea accrosses my mind, then i will start to build a mainstream website.

If you put up a site with 1000 pages, and just let it sit with some adsense on it, it won't cook, it will die. The web isn't a crock pot, it feeds on fresh original content. The only reason one would do that, especially if they have no intention of actually building something besides just throwing up content, would be if you have a great domain on it.

By itself, just having content, no matter how many pages it is is not a fine wine. Old content doesn't get better with time. :)

The sort of keywords I am after, the content does not update so often, I mean, do the definitions in the dictionary change every week? Its a reference / resource site.
