Brockie. A name I've known since I was a young boy, watching in rapt fascination as he coaxed yet another win from his competitors. The man defined car racing as a sport to me, and was the quintissential Aussie racing icon. To me, he was the coolest of the cool. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind - the legend of Brockie will live on for a long time yet. RIP Peter Brock. More here.
It was thankfully pretty quick, and happened around midday. He was taking a tight corner, slid out, and the drivers side of the car impacted with a tree. There was no second chance.. it was over at impact. The guy had a LOT of friends, and was widely respected as a racing legend. There's not too many 61 year olds out there that have this mans skill and balls. Even fewer willing to use em. He remains an inspiration
i was very fortunate and got to spend some lap time (albeit 10 very fast, very blurry minutes) with him... he was a really, really genuinely nice person. that's two Aussies in one week dieing doing what they love best...
