I am a little confused about these Broad Searches.

For a specific keyphrase for example Horse Riding Holidays in Portugal I have this as a broad search and get placed 4th on G

The top 2 advertisers are not even advertising for Portugal and are SPECIFICALLY advertising horse riding holidays in Spain!!

    The keywords being Horse Riding

Yet if I try and get listed for JUST Horse Riding there is no listing at all!!

Can someone please explain this to me?

    Thanks

You are making a small confusion:

    Your broad keyword:

    Horse Riding Holidays in Portugal

makes competition with others that bid these keywords:

    Horse Riding
    Horse Holidays
    Horse

when someone type your keyword phrase in google, it also triggers these others ads too.

you have the advantage that you have a different quality score record for:

    Horse Riding Holidays in Portugal

so give it some time and if people begin to click on your ad instead of your competitors the quality score for this keyword will increase and your ad will go up.

Having a customized keyword do not give you priviliges - who has the ad more relevant and pay more win the best position.

Thats ok and I understand kind of what you are saying however,

I have many, many pages with the keywords:

    Horse Riding
    Horse Holidays
    Horse

Yet these do not get listed along with the Horse Riding Holidays in Portutgal even though I have other similar keyphrases ranked higher than Horse Riding Holidays in Portutgal

My site http://www.equestrian-escapes.com is the same. I am climbing quick nicely for "horse riding holidays spain" but the riding holiday and horse riding is always going to take longer as they are more general search terms.

Use broad matched keywords to find out more exacts - simple as that really.

If your broad matched Horse Riding Holidays in Portugal is getting clicks, find out the exact term people are using. Then turn these into exact matches or add negatives to prevent that term from appearing again.

I am finding it difficult to understand how to target broad search terms on an SEO basis.Getting traffic in on a exact match is great but the real fruit is been able corner a broad term with high rankings.Anyone got an advice?P

Congratulations on resurrecting a thread that started 5.5 years ago and had been dormant for 3.5 years. On your first post no less. That has to be a record. Not only that, but with a comment about SEO when the thread is clearly about PPC and a subject which has been discussed and answered many times before elsewhere in the forum.
