Royal Mail have been keeping quiet about this one. Apparently you can opt out of unaddressed mail through an email address, optout, which is at royalmail co uk (munged because I don't want them to get so much spam they can't deal with real requests). I think this is a bit sly of them, because after all they were perfectly able to publicise the Mailing Preference Service for getting rid of junk mail that is addressed to you. But here they have just an email address, not even a website or a land address. You can also phone 08457950950. This was on the BBC this morning: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/breakfast/4242941.stm
Have you also heard how some poor posty has been suspended by RM, and is in danger of losing his job, for telling his regulars how to stop the junk mail.
Yes. It will be scandalous if they don't reinstate him, and make a full apology. I can see Royal Mail are making a lot of money from delivering unaddressed mail, but someone has to dispose of this stuff in the end. I wonder how much of it ends up in landfill?
It was this story Amazing that he is facing the sack because he cares more about his customers than his employer does. He was asking for trouble though, circulating a leaflet, if he'd just spoken to his customers his employer would probably never have found out.
Thanks for this, Obelia. I've just registered. I get a good 5-6 junk letters every day, and they go in the bin unopened. Since I've never opened a single piece of junk mail, and at 5 a day over my lifetime I've received almost 50,000 pieces, it seems like a big waste of tree. A friend of mine was a postie for years, and he reckons over half his daily load consisted of junk mail. He had to quit when he got a bad back, so it's not just a petty annoyance - it's dangerous
You can have major fun by opening them, swapping the contents between Junk mailers and sending them back in their own envelopes. Don't send the application forms, just the included sales blurb. It gives you a warm fuzzy feeling!
