this morning on the news it was claimed that brits frequently and without compunction break the law, especially with regard to paying in cash so that workmen don't have to pay VAT, stealing from work i.e. 'perks of the job', and saying nothing when we are given too much change etc. personally i now work for a charity so i'm afraid stealing from work would definitely be a no no, but i have worked in the offices of a large food organisation where we regularly took home cakes, pastries, etc.,all with a nod and a wink from the office manager. and yes, i will pay in cash so that workmen don't pay VAT, but i'm afraid i don't recall ever being given too much change seeing as i hardly ever check it. surely all these so called crimes are merely a means of getting back at a system that fleeces the citizens of this country every day of the week. i mean just look at how much council tax we pay on top of the taxes we pay on our wages and just about everything else. so all i can say in answer to this charge is 'power to the people!'
It isn't against the law to keep quiet if someone gives you too much change! Quite often you wouldn't even notice. The same can be said about paying for something 'cash in hand' - it is the responsibility of the profiteering workmen to declare it. As far as 'liberating' things from the office goes I suppose I'm fortunate that I do a lot of work at home, so have a legitimate reason for collecting stationery.
