British MP David Davis Resigns over Police State

Good for Conservative MP David Davis who is taking a stand against his government and its outrageous attacks on the liberties of the British people. Davis will resign his seat in Parliament and force a by-election so that "the nation as a whole, would have had the opportunity to debate and consider one of the most fundamental issues of our day - the ever-intrusive power of the state into our lives, the loss of privacy, the loss of freedom and the steady attrition undermining the rule of law."

Though in his incredibly eloquent statement Davis goes through a powerful litany of abuses, his resignation is largely in response to PM Gordon Brown's attempt to extend the power of the government to hold terror suspects for 42 days without charging them with a crime. (42 days, by the way is not arbritary, but, is, I am sure, in honor of British writer Douglas Adams.)

I am unsure of how good Davis is on economics or other issues, but it is nice to see a politician making a principled stand for the rights of his constituents--it is wholly unlike our pusillanimous American representatives. Furthermore, it is encouraging to see that the other political parties that would challenge him are refusing to oppose his re-election.
