Breaking up very long articles into multiple pages, any downsides or penalties?

I have a site which has pages with way too much text in them, making the user scroll very far. I was wondering if I split these pages into many small pages, will the articles still rank the same as they do now? Nothing will have changed except adding 'page 1, page 2, page 3, etc" links at the bottom so the user can browse the article easier.

It surely will affect your rankings. However, if what you really after is conversion, I recommend that you split that very long article into couples of pages so it won't be troublesome for visitors to navigate or to exactly see what they are really after on your site. Another thing, having a very long article would cause your site to look like a MFA site.

That is what I was afraid of, thank you.

I really cannot have the site drop from the rankings it has now, I have pages at number one for a bunch of great keywords, and I cannot lose this. I guess I will keep the long articles then.

I really wish there was a way to split the article into multiple pages without losing rankings though. This sucks.

Thank you for your help though.
