Pakistan's cricket coach Bob Woolmer was murdered in his hotel room on Sunday after the team's World Cup loss to Ireland, Jamaican police said.

A post-mortem examination found that Mr Woolmer's death was due to "asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation".

"In these circumstances, the matter of Mr Woolmer's death is now being treated as murder," Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas said in a statement.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

The statement was read by a police spokesman at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel - where Mr Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious by staff on Sunday morning.

Mark Shields, the deputy chief commissioner of Jamaican police, said there could be one or more people involved in the murder and urged the killer or killers to give themselves up.

Earlier, Jamaican police questioned members of Pakistan's cricket squad over the death.

After being intervewed for about an hour and fingerprinted, the team left for the resort of Montego Bay.

They are due to return to Pakistan on Saturday. They were not interviewed under caution.

But the person must have been known to Woolmer if he managed to enter inside. If I am not wrong, none of the other people who were staying on the same floor heard signs of a struggle. Looks very:confused:

It's not suicide, unless he strangled himself hard enough to break his own neck, which in all fairness I would say is impossible. If he made himself pass out by choking himself (possible) and fell and broke his neck then thats different but it seems like it's all consistent with strangling.

When the news broke out on Indian TV couple of days, this sensationalist channel kept showing a clip of Shoaib Akhtar making an angry gesture at Bob Woolmer & yelling at him :p

Note that this was well before any news about him being strangled.

Yes. I too have a feeling it has something to do with match fixing scandal. Maybe Woolmer found out something that he shouldn't have.

    It was disturbing ...
This is worst ever event in Cricket...
Pakistan team is prime suspect.. I don't see anyone in future will like to coach Pakistan ... Its no more sport for Pakistan, Its a business and bloody mafia business to fix matches.

I don't know why but every alternate controversy in cricketing nations is associated with Pakistan. Something wrong with Pakistan Cricket Board or Team.

I hope they will take lesson from this issue. and will make it gentleman's game hence forth.

The Pakistan team now has to undergo fingerprint and DNA tests.

What an embarrassment for the game...cricket is no longer a gentleman's game.

That's extremely sick. I hope its not murder. But if it is, whoever involved is totally out of his mind.

I suspect it have something to do with match fixing mafia, as someone said above, may be he found something he should not have.
