SAO PAULO, Brazil - Brazilian prosecutors asked a federal judge on Tuesday for permission to file a civil lawsuit against Google Inc., alleging it was withholding user information required for a separate criminal investigation. The prosecutors want Google to pay a $61 million fine and asked that if it refuses to comply with its information request, its Brazilian unit be dissolved. In its request, the federal prosecutor's office in Sao Paulo alleges that several community pages on Google's popular social network site, Orkut, have been used to organize criminal activity and promote child pornography... http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14622759/
Yeah and this is the latest news and a funny title http://oraclewatch.eweek.com/blogs/google_watch/archive/2006/09/01/12954.aspx
What is the Brazilian government doing about the Brazilian ISP's that are the conduit for Brazilian distrirbution and consumption of harmful content? Sue Japan for making digital cameras used for creating the images to begin with! Brazil taking high moral ground, LOL. I couldn't watch GlobeTrekker with my kids in the room when they were traveling to Brazil.
lol, i'm brazilian and i'm ready to win money for who do racist comments here and you can be sure it won't be $3
The Brazilian government is wanting to prove that Brazilians are involved in illegal activities and is asking Google to help them prove it. Tell your government to stop accusing its people.
You mean like google blindly accuses people of adsense fraud with a form letter and won't provide proof? Yeah, high moral ground. Go figure. :/
I dont even know what orkut is. I receive dozens of mails every day from brazil trying to steal my email, ebay, bank password... and other evil things... so the problem is not orkut or google... it is brazil itself... I think the prosecutors should file a lawsuit against their own country Joking... i like brazil a lot
If I was Google, I would pack up and go. They provide a valuable internet tool for Brazil, why does every government think that Google can be used in any way they please? It is a private company and it collects personal data. I would dread to think what would happen if just one government had access to its vast databases. I would think there would be a complete uproar if the brazillian google closed, im not sure how widespread it is over there but I suspect its popularity is worldwide. Maybe the government just doesnt know what power search engines really have. Sure enough, google owns orkut and they should cooperate to remove the offending material - maybe even pass on the offending IP addresses, but thats the full extent of what they should have. Google isnt a tool for dictactors (or any government) and it should always be that way.
