Surely someone here trains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu... what got you started and how are you liking it?

    Hello,

I train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the Andy Roberts BJJ Gym, part of the Gracie gyms (Andy trains under and is good friends with Roger Gracie). You may know Andy from appearing as a judge for the UFC... Anyway I digress.

The reason I got into BJJ is because I was a kick boxer and then started in MMA, after a couple of fights my need for a good ground game became apparent so this is why I started training in BJJ.

As for how I like it - I love doing BJJ, it's brings a new level of competitive fun to the ground work in a fight, and basically I like having an overall advantage in a fight.

Have you started training yet? if so what made you decide to get started?

I've been training for about five months, but I trained a bit last year as well. I decided to learn BJJ because it's beneficial in sticky situations.

Krav Maga is beneficial in sticky situations. BJJ teaches you a lot of cool stuff, but I probably wont be getting anyone in a triangle in a street fight.

It's not the submissions that will necessarily help you; it's knowing how to get to a superior position. People who don't train BJJ or MMA typically won't know a good way of escaping mount. If someone were to get me in a ground-and-pound position prior to BJJ, I'd just take it to the face because I wouldn't remotely have a clue how to escape it.

Well, naturally it would help you when it comes to a fight against someone else who has a ground game, but I'd have chosen to be in that situation since it would be in some organised sporting fight. As described in my initial post it was for that reason I found the need to learn BJJ. My Krav Maga comment was more aimed at non-professional or competitive situations like in a street fight where you'll need to defend yourself. I have no intention of getting down on the concrete with someone, I'd sooner deal with them while they're still standing.
