I just read this article that stated that you should not exchange links if your website is a new startup. Do you think this is true?

Well, in my opinion you should first start to submit your site to web directories, article directories and so on before starting to do any link exchanges. The trick is to keep things as natural as possible so just starting to exchange links with sites could look unnatural to Google and you could get penalized.

Just my opinion I could be wrong. :D

    Ya itz true,

As ur site is new u will not get high PR site to exchange and in frustration you can do link exchange with such site that are new and some that are even banned. And this happens very frequently in three way link exchanges. I would suggest you to do some quality directory submission, article submission, and do follow blog comment posting in related category. And after u get a pr of at least 1 than you will enjoy doing link exchange.

I believe that you are able to exchange links with a new sites. Providing that the websites that you are exchanging with are of related content and that you are willing to give up that little bit of link space to exchange with.

I submit to directories, without the url back, (No space for them), and i comment on forums, blogs, and social networking websites.

I also keep my company and personal websites in my signatures on many forums that i am a very active member of.

    Regards,
    ~ Mike

Yeah I agree, I believe that it's better when your a new started to just hit loads of directories with submissions to get indexed on then. Google trawls alot of other directories with it's spiders, Google holds sites like Dmoz and Yahoo, Msn in high regards so it's a good idea to submit to directories like that. Also becoming an active member on forums and having a live-link to your sites in your sig on the forum is a good idea, aslong as the forum is of quality material and has a good PR and is active. Dont think that finding a forum with lots of dead posts and trolling is a good way to increase your sig-link output because Google wont recognise it and will probably penalise you for that. And try to submit to directories in a one-way link, Reciprocal links from directories aren't worth the space that they take up as far as google is concerned. Article submissions are always good too, ask some good quality sites if you could write an article for them for free or submit some copy to them for free, only ask that you can put a link to your site in there somewhere. it takes time and patience but once your PR rises then start reciprocal linking. it'll be worth the hassle if you take time to ensure quality links. Google will love it too.
