Branding is advertising. Advertising is branding. The two terms, "branding," "advertising," are the same. So, advertise in places that you think the readers may like what you have to offer. I hate to be short and sweet like that, but that's basically it.
Try using the content network on google. just blast your brand to every website you can advertise on.
Best to start by advertising, then create as many backlinks as you can, but not to many to begin with though
I would say branding is an important "part" of advertising, what I like to do is produce custom backgrounds for each of my social media outlets. YouTube, twitter etc. and then link them to my blog. The most important thing is consistency and also spreading the word as much as possible once you've established your brand. So have a brainstorming session and try and come up with as many creative ideas as possible.
