Open up a spreadsheet or document and start brainstorming keywords related to your website.

    • 1. Write a list of keywords related to your industry
    • 2. Write a list of keywords related to your services and/or products
    • 3. Check competitors’ title tags and meta tags for additional keyword ideas
    • 4. Use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool ‘website’ option to find additional keywords related to your site
    • 5. Use Google Insights and check ‘top searches’ and ‘rising searches’ for additional keywords
    • 6. Use the Google Wonder Wheel to find additional keywords you may not have thought about

Prioritising Using The Google Adwords Keyword Tool

Prioritise the keywords identified in the brainstorming session from highest to lowest value.

    • 7. Select the country you are optimising in
    • 8. Enter all the keywords into the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and click ‘get keyword ideas’
    • 9. Sort the results by ‘local search volume’ in descending order from highest to lowest value
    • 10. Choose ‘exact’ from the Match Type drop down menu
    • 11. Go down the list and add all the keywords that are relevant to your offering
    • 12. If in doubt, conduct a search on Google and ensure that at least 5 out of the top 10 results are direct competitors, with at least one competitor in the top 3
    • 13. Where possible, break down keyword list into ‘transactional’ and ‘informational’ keywords
    • 14. Export the keywords in order of highest to lowest search volume and create your master SEO keyword list.
