Boycott Google?

I don't know if I'm alone here, but I'm sure sick of just one search engine dominating the entire scene. It would sure would be a lot less risky from an SEO standpoint, if all three companies had a near-equal share of the market.

Google's got too much of a controlling monopoly and I just don't like it. They can simply ruin a site within one day, with their flaky SERPS.

I really hope MSN and Yahoo give them a run for their money. Maybe we could all promote other engines instead of just google. I wish there were something we could do.

I agree with you 100%. Because if one day we loose rankings on Google then are income is over, Yahoo and Msn are not going to supply the necessary traffic.

We are not promoting google. Google is the best searh engine compared to others and we use it becuse we find what we are looking for; as simple as that :)

Thats true. But what im trying to say is, Msn and Yahoo need to invest some money and fix up there search engines, so they can compete with the big boy. That way, there could be a more even market share, and if we loose rankings in Google we could still have good traffic from Msn and Yahoo.

I agree that MSN and Yahoo need to do something fast if they want to stay in the race, especially since Google just signed a $900 million NewsCorps deal.

3 engines having equal market share is ideal but unfortunately, it's a free market... no one's forcing the users to user google... they want to because the results are still the best.

one day, if msn and yahoo improve their results, the users will automatically move to use msn and yahoo...

Strange why most of our site is ranking very good in Google but not in MSN and Yahoo. I think I should disagree to this suggestion of boycotting Google.
    Google rules! lol:D

I believe in the natural laws of supply and demand, but I'm just saying that I'd be happier if the market was more balanced between the engines ... instead of a dangerous monopoly with shaky SERPS results.

I don't know how about you guys, but I switched to Yahoo and MSN for my everyday searches about a month ago, though I was using Google for many years before. I am just tired of all that spam sites on the top of Google SERPs recently.

I use Alltheweb for my searches. I find it brings up more relevant results than Google.

No, if you were to boycott Google then you would refuse to use "any" of their services, no point in doing something have assed - Definition of Boycott. This boycott would also include disallowing Google to crawl & index your site and somehow something tells me nobody here is prepared to do just that.

Just my personal thoughts on this subject and Googles market share. Whether Google has the most relevant search or not, we have to remember that the average user doesnt know a serp from a sponsor listing.

The average consumer uses what they know best. At this moment what they know best is the Google brand. To offer an example, take McDonalds, how many of you would say it is the best hamburger every made? I am sure we would all agree it isnt, but yet McDonalds sold more hamburgers than any other hamburger chain in the world.

The reason for this IMO is the fact that it is a brand that people know. People use what they know. For all you coffee drinkers look at Starbucks, we all have paid 5 bucks for a cup of coffee from them. Prior to Starbucks there were specialty coffee shops, but why do we use them, its simple, we know the name and because of the branding we will continue to pay 5 bucks per cup of coffee.

Google is no different, Google has branding and its a name that people know and will use until such time as some other company comes along with a catchy name and the ability to mass promote themselves. I personally dont like Googles results for most of the searches I perform but yet I always seem to use them, why, its because I know the name and its always on my mind when I am online.

Google understands this and knows that by buying or getting their claws in to other brands that people know it will always keep their brand on the mind of the public. Face it, most of the companies Google has purchased or got their hands in to they could have created those portals for themselves. The reason they didnt IMHO is due to the fact these other portals have name recognition which in turn allows the consumer to continue to see Googles name through other recognizable name brands.

Boycotting Google is a Bad idea generally. They are good so let them stay... MSN and Yahoo are good too but google is always better. Their product seems more reliable than the other searches.

LOL thats funny googles services are top notch no doubt i mean you cant even compare gmail to hotmail, but when it comes to searches like Florida mentioned their branding is realy good and thats why most people are drawn to it, but in all honesty their search results are not so good, i find MSN provides much more relevant results when it comes to searching, just try it im sure you will agree

I'm not sure what the effect of even 100 people from this forum boycotting google would be. Seriously, Google is not going to vanish overnight. Their real demise is up to the other search engines other there to compete with them and offer something newer, more unique and more appealing to audiences. I think Yahoo is making a major mistake in not minimalizing their search page like Google has so it's just a "Search" window. Just my 2 cents.
