I have read up a couple articles about bounce rate and I really don't understand it.

maybe this question being answered will help me. I don't know if you want a high or low bounce rate.

I changed my site theme a month ago. I just looked at google analytics and my bounce rate when from 22% to 53% avg.

This is really bad isn't it?

It seems that your bounce rate has increased to over double which means over double of your visitors are leaving your site just after the first page they visit which is the landing page compared to what they use to.

Although you should look at your bounce rate and try to get it lower, don't forget that it could have also resulted from your site getting listed on another site which has given you visitors that are not interested in your site whereas them visitors would have not come to your site previously because you would have not had your link there. For example, if you site is english and someone ads it to a popular spanish site then you will likely to receive a higher bounce rate if they can't read it do to them not being able to speak english, although many can.
