Bought domains, now requested back.

Ok, so I need some advise as to what to do. I recently bought two domains for $20 from someone who bought them from someone else. They are fairly old domains dating back to 2004. After 3 weeks I have received an email from the person I have bought the names from claiming that the person he bought the names from had the names sold out of his account by someone other than him. The email I received is:

What can the 'original' owner do if I choose not to give the names back? I just don't want any legal trouble.

    Thanks

I would ignore it, you have done noting illegal it appears, you were under the impression that it was a legal legitimate sale.
For all we know the "seller" could have realised they were worth more then what he sold them for, and is now trying any way possible to get them back.

Edit: both domains would be worth alot more then $20.

At most, Godaddy would likely (if the actual story is true and they domains were stolen) would be to take the domains off your hands, and return them back to their rightful owner, however most people would have reported "stolen" domains, pretty damn quickly, Even a few small sites that I own, I would notice if they were no longer owned by me pretty quickly.

This also could be some sort of scam.. He could of got a higher offer for the domains and is just trying to get them back so he can make money off of the difference. Im gathering this because I've seen it before.. Not in just this context

If I were you I would ignore this BS message. It does not make sense and you have done nothing wrong in both illegal and ethical. How could the domain "ever able" transfered to you if those "previous owner" owned on them and not the person who sold you owned? Scam and so lame to me.

That email makes you the fourth owner. Your seller bought it from someone who bought it from someone else - and that "someone else" supposedly wants it back. I suspect one of the last 3 owners has regrets about selling it. I wouldn't do anythiug unless contacted by the "original owner" and he can present a valid case.

Sell the domains back to the original owner at premium rate if he contacts you...

This happens often...someone hacks into your account and does whatever he wants with your domains. for those will a countable domains that they monitor often, this is easily noticed but those with hundreds of domains get ditched big time!

Sounds like scam to me, too. I'm not aware of the civil law in the US, but I suspect that it protects you as the buyer as long as you had no reason to believe that something was wrong with the purchase. In any case you should not face legal trouble, so go ahead and keep the domain name. It would be the "owner" to _prove_ that the name had been stolen anyway...

Only ask for proof that he was the owner if you intend to not keep the item.

    Seems a scam.
Try to get the history of the domain, estimate it, then sell it
    Or use it.

ask refund and return the domains.

or just wait for few days you may waste your money if they are stolen domains and registrar simply takes back from you.

Yeah it sounds like a scam. I would offer to sell it back for a high price if he wants it that bad.
