    Hi,

I'm having a horrible problem. My computer has been slowly dying over the past few weeks. I started using windows XP professional edition, I can't even login to windows, I got to the background, but no start menu, no icons etc. Using Ctrl+alt+del I could access my programs, but soon they started freezing my computer and crashing it. I decided to just wipe the hard drive using my windows 98 boot disk, with my intent to install 98, then upgrade back to XP. But during the installation, a window appears saying: Boot Sector Write ! Virus: continue y/n ? :(

The computer freezes there. So I did some research and now this appears to be a boot sector virus. Now friend of mine installed win xp on my computer, and only first day it was working and since that its freezing my pc. Please help me! Anything would be most appreciated.

    Thank You

Do you have multiple rams installed on your pc??
PC freezing is mostly caused due to bad rams. Your pc should work fine after the fresh install of winxp IMO.
What are the specs of your computer?

Boot into a live Linux CD, and do a few hours work/play from there. If it freezes up, then you know it's your RAM or some other hardware problem.

    Do the following:
    1) Remove your HDD and install it to another PC, and take backup.
    2) Perform 'Low Level Format' on HDD.
    3) Install Windows

Try to scan your HDD using the command CHKDSK under WinXP

To avoid in the future make sure you run good anit-virus software. Avast is a great free option and includes a boot-time scan that would probably have fixed your problem, as it boots the anti-virus scan before anything else like windows. Don't ever use Windows98 again unless you have to, it's not updated anymore and so much easier to exploit.
    Good luck.

It's not a big problem but... u have to resolve it now.. coz it can be a big problem for your data.... start your window in safe mode and take backup of all your data... and run chkdsk command form cmd.

now restart your PC and run it .... see it works or not... if not then intall new window on it....
