Interesting article. It should work. I know the firefox plugin helps a lot if you're all over your own site. The biggest jumps I got were from entrecard droppers because most have the firefox alexa toolbar.
I think it works as I also installed alexa toolbar to my firefox and alexa widget to my blog - technolizard.blogspot.com and in a short time my alexa ranking decreased by about 50%
