Crappy content - more clicks ... for me that really works... On the other hand, if you invest serious amount of time to develop a great and unique content, then AdSense as a monetization method is a waste of time and money...
you need to uplaod unique and quality content and your site need more and more traffic to get more adsense earnings. this is my personal experience.

However, you definitely have a valid point. I remember having clicked at text ads once in a while..but never image ads!
this thread seemed to raise controversy, many debate over it. we all know content is king. quality content can get lots of traffic, hence better earnings. and another way to increase income is to employ some techniques to increase ctr, and this is the very suppose of this thread. so i do not think its necessary to debate which is more important, but if these techniques are effective.
