Making text on a page bold is believed to emphasize it's importance. Will making anchor text bold have the same or lesser effect on the page where the link resides. (not the page that is linked to)

    Example:
    <a href="#"><strong>example anchor text</strong></a>
    HTML:

    Interesting question :)

I would think that bold a link is the same as to bold a string of text, it will not affect the linked page thou..

it does affect... if you think H1 tag is important, then you shouldn't miss this one either.

But this is very very small factor though. Possibly it is devalued today.

Yes bold tag emphasize the importance of the word. I also think that it won't hurt your site if you bold your anchor text.

Using bold anchor text would look bad on websites. Most visitors are used to normal anchor text.

bold and strong is not exactly the same.

Strong tells the SE that this word is important, while bold is just for your site. Bold was playing the role of strong in the past, but now for SEO purpose, you should use strong.

Use bold when you want to emphasis a word or sentence, or anything on the site.

As for your anchor text, why not? I am doing it when I need, in menus...

The only difference I know of is that in voice/aural browsers (for visually impaired people), text within strong tags is read out vehemently while text within bold tags is not emphasized at all.
