First of all, you want to make sure the emails you have received about the charges are not fakes. Scammers sometimes send fake PayPal emails that go something like this:

    "Dear Valued Customer,

You have made a payment of $713 to XYZ Corporation. If you DID NOT make the payment, please click on the link below to cancel"

If you were to click on such a link, you would be brought to a fake PayPal website, and if you logged into that fake PayPal website, you would be giving away your PayPal login information to a third party...which means they WOULD be able to make unauthorized charges, unless PayPal's security system prevents the charges from going through.

That's essentially how a phishing scam works, but that is one of many forms it can take. The idea is to steal your PayPal password, and sometimes other information like credit card numbers or even your social security number, so be VERY CAREFUL when opening these kinds of emails.

Now, if you see these charges on your credit card or bank statement, give PayPal a call and file an unauthorized claim.

The easiest way to go about this is skip the merchant and go directly to your bank. If you've been improperly charged, file a complaint and they'll remove the charges instantly.

Go to your bank and they will tell you exactly where your money went, you may even be able to do a charge back and get your money back.
