Bodybuilding Supplements - custom PHP reviews & price system

This is a website done from scratch in PHP. It features friendly URLs, a review system, review feedback, and a unique price comparison cart... allowing users to load items into the cart and then compare the total bill from 7 different retailers. It is all run with a web based back end.

It is very fast and i really like the design, unlike a few similar supplement websites that i have seen lately.

Just a small question why do i need to signup before I can add a product in a basket? If you take a look at oscommerce for example you wont have to do that. Then in the end when you pay you signup as well. But i guess you got a good reason to do it like this. Get ride of that nasty admin picture. That wont look really trustfully to your potential customers. Why are u using hammers for your rating system? Why not use stars or something else that will attract the eye a bit less. Your selling supplements right and not hammers? Check your font sizes, outlining of text try to get some symmety into the page.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the prices of the supplements? I just see a comparison to other sites.

Thanks to everyone for the good comments.

    >>Just a small question why do i need to signup before I can add a product in a basket?

Good question. The only reason is because I'm tracking the cart contents by userID. I hadn't thought that I might also track the cart contents by the guestID. I also might leave it this way to encourage people to register.

    >>Get ride of that nasty admin picture.

    Right.

    >>Why are u using hammers for your rating system? Why not use stars or something else that will attract the eye a bit less. Your selling supplements right and not hammers?

Well, they are gavels; so I thought it tied in with the site name/theme. Someone else said they look like axes so I may re-consider this.

    >>Check your font sizes, outlining of text try to get some symmety into the page.

Can you explain more about what you mean here? Do you mean all of the text in the blue side boxes should be the same size? Thanks.

The prices are on the left, under the item photo after you click into the item detail page. You can also see a range of prices when you look at any list of items, search, viewing by category or viewing by company. Let me know if they are really that hidden.

The site shows where the best price can be found; it doesn't actually sell anything. The site is sort of a cross between Pricewatch and ePinions... price comparions between retailers as well as user reviews.

I was talking about your category pages. Have a look here . As you can see the font sizes are all different and if im not mistaking your using different fonts as well. The text of the top headers is not nicely outlined. Unless you wanted it to look like that. I would personally experiment a bit more with maybe just two different fonts and sizes. Outline them all on the left or maybe all in the middle. On your ingredients & details pages , make sure between your headeres and the text is always a space. Maybe a different color to the title , headers in the text. It will give the page itself a bit more color it looks a bit plain if you ask me right now. On this page in the middle, on the left the price comparison is shown, but one of them is showing a different color then the rest, one is blue and the others are black colored. When I follow the link, retailers have your site listed here, I get a email form, but I dont see any text that will give me as a retailer a bit more inside info of why I should sign up. IF you add a bit of text what you guys do, how people can benefit from it , how many visitors you get they will be more eager to sign up. And I would like to write a bit more , what the rating is, how it works , why people should rate a product.

    I appreciate the testing.

    >>As you can see the font sizes are all different and if im not mistaking your using different fonts as well. The text of the top headers is not nicely outlined. Unless you wanted it to look like that.

Maybe we are seeing two different things? The only fonts used on the site are arial as the base and Impact for h1-h3. Can you possibly upload a screenshot of what you're speaking of? And also, what browser are you using?

    >>in the middle, on the left the price comparison is shown, but one of them is showing a different color then the rest, one is blue and the others are black colored.

The colored ones are links (affiliates) so I did want them to stand out. Underline perhaps?

Very good points; that sort of information is not fleshed out in a FAQ yet.

vBmechanic, now that I understand the site its sweet and I may even be using it. Let me know if you need help writing reviews (I've probably took 20 supplements at one time or another) maybe in exchange for a few links.

Hey Mizt, please do use it :) If you could, leave some reviews-- the best one will win a $50 gift certificate for more supplements. It is tough to get a site started with no content.. no one wants to be the first to leave a message or a review. I can offer a link as well, but the site is PR 0 at the moment. Send me an email if you want: judge at supplement judge d.t com

Thanks! I think if it catches on, it could be quite helpful. Leave a review or two if you have a minute.

10-week update: The site is doing very well for being only a few months old-- about 300 to 500 uniques per day-- mostly driven by MSN rankings.

Now that I have some decently targetted traffic, I'd love some ideas on increasing my CTR and therefore affiliate conversions. I'm #2 on MSN for a number of company names, like Muscletech and Xyience.. I've tried to improve my company landing page so that it encourages more clicks. I've also now highlighted the affiliate links with a yellow background on the product detail page:

    http://www.supplementjudge.com/supplement_companies/Xyience.html
    http://www.supplementjudge.com/supplements/Xyience/NOX_CG3.html

Does this look too commercial? What would you do to encourage people to click through to the product prices? Most of my competitors deal only with one affiliate source (bodybuilding.com) and do not compare prices.. I suspect "Click to see our low price" might get more clicks but my site offers more information by showing the prices right away. What would you do with it?
