Bluejacking as a marketing tool?

    Hi All,

I've just discovered a java download called "BT Explorer" that constantly searches the local vicinity for other Bluetooth enabled devices and sends them a vcard saying 'Please visit AddAnImage.com'

Is anyone else trying this gorilla marketing tool?

Not sure how effective it's been so far but it's basically free and a great way to use your phone at the train station or busy bar ;)

    Cheers, p.

Is Gorilla Marketing the latest hype? :)

Sounds like Spam to me. Unsolicited commercial electronic bulk notification is illegal last time I checked. Not just that, it's annoying the hell out of people too.

agreed ! unless the consumers are targeted well no marketing campaign can be effective. even if the the visiter comes to the site following the sincere instructions of the message(imagining it was legal) most of them would not be interested in your offer(unless the offer is...). Instead of consumers You get bunch of people annoyed towards your brand.

I am always a firm believer that marketing is like science-- u have proven theories but its never wrong in experimenting.

    Hi Kay.s,

Thanks for the reply. I got all excited when I saw the possibility of this 'new' marketing tool and hadn't really thought it thru. My desperation of wanting/needing to succeed is making my judgement cloudy ;)

I've been discussing the issue on a bluejacking site and there are some interesting uses such as at gigs where you're informed that you can recieve band promotional material if you switch on your bluetooth. In that way it's targeted which is fair enough.

I'm going to a related conference in November so perhaps that will be a 'fair' place to broadcast... I'll have a think on that one.

Gorilla marketing... where a 400-pound salesman sits on the consumer until he or she buys something.

I don't think is spam because whenever you receive a bluetooth message on your mobile, you are prompted if you want to accept it or not... you can always decline it. It looks like could become a new marketing venue.

Don't let your judgement get cloudy, stay far away from these types of tactics.

You might make some money in the short run, but in the long run it could even cost YOU money due to potential legal battles. ;)

    Hey MassimaStudios,

That's in interesting story. Looks like Coldplay have done well out of it. It's a medium that will probably work until the unscrupulous people out there abuse it - which will be easy because the technology is cheap.

Good that a big name lke Transvision are involved as that lends some credibility.
