Blogs in subdirectories or in separate domains?

As a book publisher, I've heard that "every book deserves a blog." If I use XSP or Dreamweaver to build my main website and also want to have WordPress blogs for very specific niches (ie one for each book I publish), would it better to place these blogs within my main website, or in separate domains, with links to the main website/domain?

For instance, right now I've got a blog at a subdirectory:

    http://www.nwpub.net/Selling-Produce/

Would a blog under its own, separate domain name produce any better SEO?

    Thanks very much,

I would probably prefer to have my blog on a separate domain. And here's the reason...

Let's say that the number one keyword I want to go after is "selling produce".

    so my options are
    1.)http://www.nwpub.net/Selling-Produce/
    2.)http://www.selling-produce.com

Number two will tend to rank higher for that keyphrase due to keyword prominence. The further to the left the keyphrase starts in the URL the greater the prominence.
