Blogs: do you HAVE to update weekly?

I keep seeing people say that you HAVE to update blogs 1-2 times per wek at least.

Is this true? Will Google deindex you if you don't?

If you're creating a blog for backlinks only, would it be OK to create a few good posts with some backlinks to them and then just occasional posts??

    Be grateful for any feedback.

I update every day for both my blogs. It's rather tiring. based on the Adsense page views and statcounter, weekends are bad. I'm considering updating from Mon to Fri, and rest on weekends.
If you are creating blog for backlinks, you need to update regularly to keep the PR. I think you can get better result by using article directories for backlink, rather than creating a new blog. The article directories have high PR already.

Google isn't to de-index you if you're only updating once every two weeks, but if you're counting on the backlink why push your luck?

That blog link that you want is only as valuable as the time you put into creating it. If you backlink your blog itself you can help improve the PR over time as well.

I'm not interested in traffic - just keeping blog indexed to get backlinks.

My main questions is - in order to keep blog indexed and the backlinks worth something - do I need to concentrate on posting frequency or backlinks to the blog?? (My SEO time is limited which is why I can't just write post after post).

I had a blog that I discontinued using 18 months ago and it still ranks for a great keyword phrase. I think I have made 2 posts on it since I stopped using it.

If you are just interested in quality, relevant, permanent backlinks with a high potential for PR funneling power, I would recommend trying article marketing if you haven't already considered it. That way you don't have to bother with a blog if you are not blogging regularly.

I did an experiment. I updated several of my blogs with new content everyday, and they ranked on about page 3 with no advertising or work on them. I left them for about 7-10 days, not updating content for the duration, and they'd all dropped to page 10. After the 7-10 days, I began updating daily again, and within the next 3-4 days I was back on page 3 (some were on 2 even) for decently competitive keywords. So it's safe to say: Daily Content is key to keeping Google happy. ;)

1-2 times a week, if you are serious about blogging and what to make it successful or even just have a lot of readers you need to be adding posts to your blog every single day.
I have worked ona celebrity blog and it takes up all your time 24/7 else your just not in with the news. It can really depend on what niche your blog is.
