Blog commenting is good but compared to what? Generally, it works, and it's good, especially SEO wise, but then I don't know the method you're using to do blog commenting either.

Blog commenting is always good. If the blog is do-follow then it serves two purpose: 1. Building backlinks 2. Getting targetted traffic
If you do non related comment on the blog the owner will delete your comment. So you will not get back links to your site.
Blog comments are just one small link generation method. Build one or two per day over a prolonged period and they help. Don't do it for link juice, do it for traffic. Comment on high traffic blogs in your niche that also have proven editorial input.

blog comments are good to your site but if you abuse it by doing a spam comments your site maybe banned by the search engines..

making blog comments is really useful for accelarating your indexing by google if it is relevant and related to that blog and ofcourse that blog should have high ranks more than 2.
