Blogroll links frowned upon?

    Hi,

a big part of my link building campaign is based on relevant blogroll links. Now it seems like many of them got discounted at this update. I am digging through Matt Cutts's blog and there seems to be nothing that can indicate that they took a stronger stance against blogroll links.

Has anyone seen or read something about Google penalizing blogrolls?

It's not just blogrolls. Google has been discounting sitewide links (links that appear on every page) for quite some time. They have been hitting footer links to other sites for a couple of years.

You won't find info on every issue in Matt Cutts blog. He will only point out a few things that sites get penalized for. His job is to help eliminate some of the spammy sites out there. It is not to help everyone get a #1 ranking.

Any links that appear generic, sitewide, or part of normal navigation seen to have significantly less importance in the eyes of Google than text links within the body of the page content.
