Blogging software

I'm thinking of adding a blog to a certain site. Since I'm new to this, I was wondering what other people (you) think is the best free blogging tool available.

Since I am a programmer, I was wondering whether it makes sense to write my own customized blog application. Any thought?

Do the free blogging tools help with SEO? Would I be better off using something I wrote myself for SEO purposes?

Use WordPress as almost everything attached to it is free i.e. plugins, themes etc.

Also, very little optimisation needs to be done with WordPress and with a few tweaks can rank very high on Google Search.

    Wordpress or MovableType

Wordpress has had a number of security issues recently, whereas MT is a lot more secure

I would prefer to have the blog work on my own doamin, on the server of my choise, using my own database - to keep control of everything from start to end. From what I can tell, this is not possible with wordpress. Are there any free, good tool that can help me achieve this, or will I have to write my own tool?

Sorry. I don't get it. Search engine results for wordpress gave me wordpress.com and wordpress.org - wordpress.org offers a download. However, the instructions refer to a wordpress site. On which server will this site be located? mine or wordpress's? Could you please tell me where I can find the wordpress software you're talking about. I apologize about this, but I'm completely new to blogging...

At wordpress.org you will find the software to host a blog on your own server(recommended), and at wordpress.com you can sign up for a free blog that is hosted on the servers at wordpress.com(with limited features).

    Good luck

    Wordpress

    1) Very easy
    2) Extremely SE Friendly, it'll be just a week or less before your blog appears on the first page of Google Results for related keywords (my personal experience).

WordPress is very popular, but using it won't automatically give you a high search engine position or page rank.

IMO it depends on what you need. If you just want a simple blog, and maybe the option for comments there's no reason why you can't code that yourself (because you said you're a programmer). If you want extensive features, rich text editing, plugins, premade themes etc - that's where WordPress will be the better solution.

Of course, there are others out there - TextPattern, Expression Engine, etc.

Wordpress.org is where you want to get the software. As a newbie to installing sutff and coding, I have found WP very helpful. In adittion, it is SE friendly our of the box.
