Blogging is an important technique for increasing site traffics. It brings more traffic to the website. Blogs provide one way link to your site. It helps search engine ranking.

Of course blogs can benefit your site, this also depends on your niche though, some are more successful than others.

Quite a bizzare post indeed. You are either:

    a) Simply stating the obvious
    b) Trying to promote blogging
    c) Trying to make as many replies as possible so you can get your link exposed

Creating a blog to promote a site is a waste of time. You can get one way links from a PR 0 site with no links pointing at it. Or, now you can promote two sites so that your blog has some power to pass on to your real site.

Now if you already blog for other reasons, and the only thing you're looking to get out of it isn't promotion for your main site, then it's not a waste of time.

I guess 'blogging' can mean a lot of things. Simply creating a crappy blog and pointing links to your site won't help you alot....

Yes, blogging of course can also add to the content of the site as a whole since the blog will be an extension of the site.

The more nichesque (That a word?) the better as others have eluded to.

Either way I think that EVERY business and EVERY site could benefit from a blog... Great way to announce updates, release expert knowledge and you get traffic from blog search engines.

Yes, and a frequently updated blog gets crawled often and appears well in SERPs. However if you are using WP, you may have to get some plugins to manage your meta tags as the software tends to repeat some of them which can send your pages to supplementary results.

I've never seen how my site could benefit from a blog. I write and host articles to share knowledge, and I'm starting to write a few articles with the idea of syndicating them to raise my profile ... the main reason I run my site is to show off my photos ( and to get hired to shoot portraits or commercial photography for locals ), so while the photos are fantastic and unique content, I don't think I have much that's important enough of interesting enough to say to justify a blog.

Am I missing something? Never having used one, I might be overlooking something obvious to everyone else...?
