Yes you can continue like blog.mysite.com or you can create one folder in your same website and start using there, it will look like mysite.com/blog , in the blog you have to use fresh content and need to updates blog regularly.

IT's way better to use a separate domain. :)

Thanks techbrain, ninjamtlt1 and md_monir055 for the replys. I decided to go with a seperate domain for my blog as the content on my website is only a subset of the blog content. I have done a few websites over the years, though this is my first effort in blogging. As also mentioned in other threads, I am having difficulty in keeping the blog regularly updated and fresh. Will probably take some time to figure out what topics are interesting and relevant.

If the topic is related to the original site, you can create it as a subdirectory like www.mysite.com/newtopic. If it is not closely related, you should better create an entirely new domain for that. Using subdomains like blog.mysite.com is not a good idea as subdomains are considered as separate domains by the search engines. So start a new one instead of a subdomain.

I use "general topics: for sub domain, it is very difficult to decide it.
