Actually blogger does provide statistics and it provides you with linkbacks buttons (well it does now I guest they upgraded). Also it now at the bottom of every post it has links automatically to share via twiiter facebook ect.
There are many sites where you can start blogging, and it is not much difficult to setup a blog on any site. As compare to others wordpress blogs are more easily manageable while bloggers offers extra features that could be installed on your blog. But in terms of caching Wordpress blogs gets cached easily while blogger require some efforts.
I prefer Blogspot. You only need to pay $10/year and you get hosting and everything vs: Wordpress.com $17/year hard to use interface for only domain plus extra $99/year total for no ads ect. Wordpress.org Nice but must get your own domain $10/year generally and hosting $4-7/month
If you are new in blogging and don't know anything about it then you can prefer Blogger platform and after that you can move to wordpress.
Everyone points out wordpress for a reason, and that reason is because wordpress allows you to customize your site with plugins that help the site as a whole to be entirely different. I hope this answers your question.
i think the two platforms together is good, the difference is only in wordpres helps like a plugin, if blogspot usually rely on the webmaster over one page seo
