Blogger versus Wordpress

I just got an email that got me thinking. It concerned Blogger and the fact that it is so controlled by Google that they could basically shut the blog down if they didn't like the way you ran it. They recommended going with Wordpress.

My question is which is better and why? I've got a couple of blogs with Blogger and was about ready to start ramping up with them. Should I or shouldn't I?

Let me hear all the goods and bads of each so that I can make a half way intelligent decision.

    Thanks,

Wordpress is excellent in search engine optimizer than blogger. You can check that.

Wordpress is a 100 times better then blogger mostly because of what you already stated - you ensure you have control.

There is also far more control over customization and SEO.

There are loads of conversion programs so I would switch sooner rather then later.

Yes, I agree with IndyaTalk. I have attended quite a few seminars and a lot of the internet marketers guru say that wordpress is much better than blogger as everytime when you give it a search, those blogs using wordpress normally come up top compared to those that uses blogger tools.

Having both, I strongly recommend Wordpress prior to ramping up.

I recently (today) made the switch from blogger to WP. I did this at the beginning of January, and it was really frustrating. You lose the point and click ease of Blogger as far as making quick changes to ads, widgets, etc. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for bloggers rocking those free blogs because I understand the ease of use, etc.

However, the more I am online, the more there is a push to migrate. Everyone says that if you are in blogging for the long haul, WP is a must. It's true...all the big and great blogs use it.

If you are already using a custom domain with blogger, it's not that big a deal to make the switch, and you won't lose much of what you've already built up as far as backlinks, etc. You can import your posts with a couple clicks into WP, so there is not copy and paste hell to have to go through. It migrates your images and everything. Posts may look a little different, but it's better than copying and pasting.

It's not too hard to get a nice theme and take off and ramp it up!!! Go for a host with Fantastico...make WP install soooo easy. Let me know if I can help. I can help you out with hosting and install for a cheap monthly rate. Not a push, but an option. Shop around. All you need is a domain. If you already have one, GREAT. If not, check out places like Namecheap and GoDaddy. Best of luck to you.

Just make sure you are clear, I think most people here are talking about the WordPress on your own hosting not the free WordPress that is hosted on wordpress.com .

I would highly recommend doing a Word Press blog on your own hosting but it does not hurt to have both. I have four blogspots and they do great. I also have three self-hosted Word Press blogs that I prefer but I use all of them.

Are you talking about wordpress you self host or wordpress you host on the wordpress site? If it's the latter, than you can lose both at any time.

I really recommend you set it up on your own hosting so you have full control and - for that, I would definitely recommend wordpress.

I have been advised to make sure that either one has their own domain. I'm really not clear on that. Do I need to get a new domain name for the blog or can I use the one I have on my website. I have Hostgator so the hosting is taken care of.
I appreciate all the feed back. It looks like the overwhelming choice is Wordpress. I've heard that it is harder to work with than Blogger, though. Probably not true for the people who have grown up with computers, unlike myself.

Yeah...you definitely want to use your own domain. Either your current one, or a new one which I'm sure you could get through HostGator or Namecheap. If you use your current one, you should be able to create a subdomain for your blog...something like this:

    www.yourdomain/blog/

Then you can just install WordPress on your own hosting at HostGator. HostGator has Fantastico which makes WP installation really easy. It's just a couple clicks in fact, and you'll be ready to go.

Also, there is tons of documentation online for WordPress, so you should be able to find help for any problem. You'll be able to find thousands of free themes and install them yourself. I'm not that technical and I can do that much...I know you can too.

Let me know if I can help. Best of luck!!

I can easily see Blogger dying in next 2 years unless google do something about it.

There is absolutely nothing into it and they are still using same 12 templates. I mean they can easily mould into something social + wiki kind of architecture. May be, blogger do not list in Google's immediate plan or doesnt look like profitable enough.

WordPress is a great blogging platform - tons of templates & plugins to extend it to a very powerful publishing tool.
Many users start with blogger & then move to WordPress. As it's OS, programmers & regular users create amazing extensions. I think WordPress will be around for longtime...

I would also go with a CPanel hosting, it includes an easy WordPress installation...

Move over to self-hosted (on your own domain) Wordpress NOW. Don't make the mistake of sticking with Blogger for a DAY more.

I used blogger and just moved over to Wordpress on a new domain. I imported all the old posts and such, but it's still a pain in the ass. I will also most likely lose all my pagerank and backlinks unless I do some fancy 301 redirects from my old blogger blog, which I still haven't figured out how to do properly. What a waste of time!

    You've been warned...
