For those that use blogs for building links, where and how do you put links in? Do you put links in other than in the intended URL field? Are signature links a good idea?

    Thanks.

Some put links on the "Link List" (or whatever the blogger wants it to be called) and/or links can also be found on the content but make sure it will perfectly fit and is related.. and when you are about to comment to related blogs, you can put link on your comment or on your name. :)

I usually just add the URL in the URL field. When necessary and depending on my comment, I sometimes put an <a href> in the anchor links. So far in the 4 to 5 times I tried, it worked for me. Not sure if it's best practice, though.

You should only place another link in comment when it's points to any location or referring any other same resources. but you should not always do this, because chances of acceptance may goes down although you have posted a nice and generic comment related to the blog.

I use the field allowed for "websites" and rarely try to drop links in the actual comment field - I feel it looks spammy and you'd be surprised at the amount of traffic an insightful comment on a well-trafficked blog can generate from a name alone. I have SearchStatus installed which shows whether links are "no-follow" - apparently newer versions of the add-on don't have this feature but there are alternatives (SEObook). Blog commenting totally works to boost link counts and SERP placements - even with all the no-follow nonsense happening.

As a blog owner, I know I am less likely to approve a comment if it has a link in the comment. For that reason, I believe that it is usually better to put the URL only in the URL field. Blog commenting can work if you do it right. I made a blog post about it just recently: Promoting Yourself with Blog Comments

Use your keyword in the blog comment name field. When the se spiders hit that site they will find your comment link with your keyword in it.

I put my link in the "website" area of the comment field and make an effort to leave a comment that pertains to the article.

I agree, it looks spammy when you insert your link into the text of the comment.
