Blog Topic, General or Niche?

    Hello,

I was thinking about starting a blog, but not sure if it should be general or niche. If it were general, I was thinking something like Internet Marketing (SEO, SEM, SMO..), Internet/Technology News, Sports, TV, Movies, Personal Daily Life (random). Maybe not all topics in one blog, but just a few.

Or..should I have one blog for each topic? The problem with that is that I don't know if I can create enough content on a consistent basis, like weekly or bi-weekly. So if it were a general blog, I could just write about one topic per day or so, and it wouldn't really seem like I'm falling behind in the topic.

Now that I think about it, it seems like I can get away with just grouping those topics into a little bit bigger niches, like internet marketing and internet/tech news could go together. And then sports, movies, tv could be another one. And then personal one alone..

Let me know what everybody thinks.

I would go general at first just for content's sake. If you feel the need to expand on any one topic branch out from there and start a new blog just for that.

I would go general in your case, but in the long run, it's said that if you have a niche, more than likely that blog would be more successful...

Related things are ok, however, you probably wouldn't want to have posts about bass fishing and posts about pez dispensers on the same blog.

If you're looking to make money with your blog, then niche is the way to go.

I would go for niche as well. Since there are tons of general blogs already, I can't help thinking that the majority of your audience would be just your acquaintances..

I would recommend that dont put focus on whether to start with a general or niche topic... that would be the wrong way of looking at things.

Take it from ur point of view... The blog is primarily ur thought process which is open for others to read...

So start a blog on any topic( be it niche or general) which interests u... I know this has become a cliche.. but still holds true.. ;)

I would go for niche if I were you. Choose a niche with regards to your interest so that you won't run out of topics to post..

depends on what you want to get out of your blog. its hard to market a general blog and people might not find any valye in reading it either as it talks about everything. if you do a niche blog, you can market it towards that specific community and can serve related ads at the same time.

If I am in your position, I will not start blogging just yet or I will start with a free blogging platform such as Blogger or Wordpress.com.

My advice to you will be, only start a blog that has targeted traffic. A webmaster blog means the contents are totally dedicated to the webmaster topic and a sports blog is totally dedicated to a sports topic (football on football blog, dancing on dancing blog and so on).

If you have a series of interests, start a few blogs on Blogger and start writing for these blogs. Evaluate your content creation for all your interests, which contents do you get most ideas more? In which niche you can write much more better?

After evaluation, choose only the best and start focusing on it by hosting your own blog on your own domain.

I don't recommend you to start with multiple blogs as well, trust me, content creation and the setting up stage of blogging can be a pain.

Just contact me in any way you can if you have any doubts with my replies and I will try my best to help you out. ;)

Firstly - general blogs pull more organic traffic but niche blogs attract huge reader base. For example if a person comes to your blog reading about celebrities he wont be interested in reading stuff about science & technology. This is plainly a one time visitor. Whereas in case of niche blogs the same user might subscribe to your blog's rss feed which helps you develop a strong user base.

Secondly - Niche blogs pull more money ;)

Thirdly - Niche blogs become famous soon enough
