blog SEO can increase the ranking of website which is linked by this blog........still you need to make your blogs rank higher and need to do much work over your blog............
You need to post Unique content so people will backlink to you -> More traffic, higher PR Advertising your site is best done in a blogpost with your websites description,he it's alot better tn posting the link in the blogroll because there are not much keywords + more people will click on a link in your post then a link in the blogroll (But ofcourse, placing it there is also useful)
blog will add more fresh content on your site which will let search engine bots make frequent visit. more frequent search engine bots visits your site, better it is for seo. work on the blog with one or 2 keyword in mind and then do some link building. you can add a navigation on your blog so that your visitors can browse throu yur pages on the website form your blog. you can see my blog on the recent blog to get an idea on how i implemented the top navigation on the blog theme. this was custom theme btw, but you may find something similar out there for free. otherwise you can add a text widget to link to your site pages
fresh content is important in blogging. you can drop some comment to others blog and put in signature forum and activate your self there...
