    Joining forums related to your niche area and adding
    to the community and also placing your url in your
    signature.

    Do a google search for "yourniche +forum"

    Also to start getting some immediate traffic why not
    get yourself over to socialmarker.com and onlywire.com
    and start submitting your website links for free.

    What about widgets or scripts to embed on the blog itself—do those work or is the traffic too random with these?

    writing good content is a great way. and by writing catchy titles or titles related to things people would search for like the Olympics right now is getting me allot of traffic from my blog and articles titled about the Olympics

    Submitting to RSS feed directories, article marketing, participating in niche forums or social bookmarking sites are all good ways of promoting your blog.

    - join Entrecard and install the widget on your blog
    - submit your blog's RSS
    - "bookmark" your posts
    - ask/advice on forums, including DP:)
    - join professional networks, including LinkedIn
    - promote your blog on free high trafficked sites, such as craigslist.org
    - add a link to your blog to your profiles on other sites
    - read other blogs!
    - leave comments on other blogs!

    In my opinion it is best to use a range of different promotion techniques such as article distribution, blog comments and directory submissions. Blog commenting on other blogs in your niche is especially good as you will hopefully get targetted traffic and may be able to exchange blog links with them.

    Social networking for me is the fastest way of getting traffic and indexed in Google. The Firestorm forum in my sig has daily social networking exchanges that really help to get a blog off the ground. Even if social networking like StumbleUpon is hit and run traffic, it is traffic none the less and I have gotten comments, readers, Adsense money, good Alexa rating, etc. from it.

    Another great way to advertise is with Entrecard...You put a widget on your blog and then drop a few other blogs to earn credits. You can then advertise your blog on other blogs...It is a great way to get your blog into circulation.
