Blog promoting techniques

Hi,

I've just recently started blogging and am somewhat confused about some of the real basics.

I can program in php so the site was easy to build buts its more the techniques used to promote the sites.

For example what is pinging and how can i put it to its best uses?

Also rss feeds, are these usefull and should i put my blog rss feed in any directories etc??

Use wordpress.org to build a blog and customize it the way you want. You need not take the trouble to handcode one.

Pinging basically means informing the sites that your blog has been updated. Wordpress provides an option for pinging too.

Feeds will help your readers keep track of what you are blogging about without actually going to your site. With your feed you can list your blog in the ''recent blog'' option you see in your profile.

Depends on who you want to read your blog. Find others with similar interests and comment on their sites, they'll visit, and if they like it will refer others.

The best way to promote your blog is via blogosphere itself.

You can have contextual ads in blogs, you can exchange links with other bloggers or, if you're really lucky, you can get links from some other bloggers for free. Just create a quality blog and the links will keep flowing.
