Nothing to be surprise, website/blog itself can generate natural link which can help to improve the PR

If you write blog for users but do not for search engines, Google really love it. Simple as that, as a result Google gave PR2 for him. As far as he is your friend, it is better for you to get a backlink from his site to you :)

A regularly updated blog with fresh unique content is what Google feeds on. If your blog has new content and links then you can be sure that Google will have visited the blog and stored the content in its huge data base. And then it would have assigned it a PR as well.

Do not be so excited. It may be a temporary issue. Page rank may fall in next PR update. One more thing, site content influence Google in PR update. It may be good and informative content inspired Google for this update. Wait till next PR update.

Thats good stuff. Blogs posted on free blog sites can still rank well and get updated regularly. Fresh content wins every race every time thats for sure.

maybe because of the following reasons:

    1. age of the website
    2. popularity
    3. niche of the site
