Hi , I am sure this was discussed before but I could not really find a satisfactory answer in old threads. I am planning to start a corporate blog for my B2B site but I am not sure whether I should use a subdomain or a directory of the main domain for my blog from SEO perspective. As far as I know subdomain blog will get you more incoming links to the main domain. On the other hand, mydomain.com/blog will add more SEO friendly content to the site(please correct me if I am wrong). Which one do you prefer? I would really like to hear from those who switched from one format to the other and how were their rankings/traffic affected by it? Thank you,
JMO but if I understand this correctly a sub-domain is considered another domain so it wouldn't add to the overall content of your primary domain (I think) from a SEO standpoint. And it seems to be harder to rank for, for instance, if you had the domain widgets.com then getting a better ranking for the term "widgets" would be easier then say trying to rank for the term "green widgets" with the sub-domain green.widgets.com If I want to make it like I have more content on my site I'd go with yourdomain.com/blog and make a link from the main domain to the blog and from the blog back to the main site. I usually hard code it into the sidebars so it appears on all the pages of both the main domain and the blog. I know you can add it to the top menubar, but that's just me. Hope that makes sense. I didn't switch from one format to the other, but the several domains that I tried the sub-domain technique didn't do as well ranking wise. And sites with the yourdomain.com/blog technique seemed to get more traffic. I know, not exactly split testing, but it works for me
I would like to go for a sub-domain coz that shows u much more results than a directory. You will see good results from traffic n from your ad clicks as well.
From an SEO standpoint it really doesn't matter, just choose what looks better to you and to the responses above: subdomains don't count as different domains. Also sub.domain.com is basically the same as domain.com/sub from a file structure point of view.
I would say blog.mydomain.com that's professional. Dont go for the other one.... And dont worry... your blog will be ranked equally as your main domain. just go for blog.mydomain.com
Thanks everybody, I was inclined to go with subdomain, too but I just wanted to hear some opinions about it.
No it doesn't because technically /blog and blog.domain is the same thing- search engines don't prefer one or the other- it is just like www or no www. Just pick the one that looks better to you and go with it.
i prefer blog.domain.com casue it ake the blog looks like a separate website..not part of the other one
