I'm toying with the idea of doing a blog (I've got a great idea for one ) but I'm not sure what sort of marketing you'd do on it? The subject would be general information/possible humour here and there. What sort of marketing do you do for blogs?
When you have enough content, then start marketing the site through submissions or exchanges. Lots of stuff to help you there, but content first.
Yep, as above It's vital that you write unique content - that is your own content, not ripped from other blogs or news sites. If you provide useful content, then people will link to you and this alone will help you rank well in the search engines. Remember Google and it's sandbox, so it's going to be upto 12 months before you start to rank for competitive keywords in Google, so concentrate during this period in building content and getting people to link to you. Hope this helps Darren
Very true. And unfortunately here on DP there are many lazy bloggers who don't shy back from scraping articles and such. You may want to be careful who you listen to when getting advice FatInfo and Darren however were spot on.
For me, blogs are easier to market than regular sites. Seems like the search engines love all the fresh content. If you're using Wordpress, add your ping list in the Options screen and it will automatically ping every time you post. Don't just use the pingomatic.com site that comes with it, search for "wordpress ping list" and you should find some good lists. Also, sign up for accounts at the popular social bookmarking sites (Technorati, Furl, Reddit, etc.) and claim or bookmark your blog. You can get some decent traffic if you pick good keywords for your tags. There's tons of these sites now - just search for a list of social bookmarking sites & you'll find at least 100.
