Blog Formats vs. "Normal" Websites

With blogs so easy to create, style, and maintain (and make SEO friendly), it seems that they're dominating the monetized online marketing world. Is there much case any more for a "normal" website if your site is simply promoting information? Looking forward to hearing your comments.

Good Question, dwalk104. I was thinking the same thing. I started a thread here about " de-blogging " the typical blog format to use as a static website but it did not go very far.

yeah, it's an interesting phenomenon. Perhaps fad...perhaps evolution?

    Blog Pro's:
    - search friendly
    - social bookmarking friendly
    - easy to organize lot's of content
    - lot's of scripts/plug ins available to customize
    - minimal programming required
    - scalability

    "Normal" Site Pro's:
    - total customization
    - stands out among the rest (if you have good design skills)

Normal sites are coming back. The blog thing will not last.

I prefer to handroll my own sites, because it gives me control over everything.

On the other hand, DCT has done some awesome things with WordPress at Self Made Minds.

Don't you see CMS's like Joomla or Drupal as sort of a middle-ground approach between these two extremes?

Just because you are using a "blog" such as WordPress or Drupal doesn't mean your site has too look like one.

I have seen some sites that skinned the hell out of WordPress and looked nothing like a blog. Most people simply choose not too because that is what's popular right now.

I use Wordpress as just a CMS/normal site on a few of my new sites I'm making... I think it will save a lot of manual work, but the small things that are hard to customize can/will get a little annoying

But for small sites, I think the wordpress cms will be okay

Strong point about WP is that we could easily post an update anytime, which this is what the search engine is looking for: A site that updated regularly! If you could do this with 'normal' website, then go for it.

drunk posting here :) I think that there are alot of pros & cons but alot of the websites are coming equipped with blog/content submission ready. I personally think the whole typeyourname.blogspot.com is very overrated & doesn't show me easy access. I like a blog where I can remember the unique & availiability in all areas better.
so instead of having blogger.blogger.etc have yadya.com easier to comprehend and more inclined to remember search

From what I see - mainly the blogs getting so popular not only to be of the diary type but also the home of corporate news and information - I am certain the era of blogging is already happening. Not only because blogs are easier to operate on but also because they feel interactive and that's what generally Web 2.0 is all about.
