Blog Format vs Traditional CMS?

I currently use the Joomla CMS and just recently starting using a third party blog component. This allows me to set up blog categories and tags for each post. I'd like to start a community blog and allow my readers to blog on my site. The problem is there is no solution to segment "staff" blogs from "community" blogs.

In order to accomplish seperation, I'd have to go back to staff using the Joomla CMS for articles. The URL's are still SEO friendly, but I'd lose the "blogging" features like tags and categories. I would then have the ability to set two different RSS feeds. This is a much cleaner solution for what I'm trying to accomplish from a website content standpoint.

Will the loss of "tags" on my main content have any real impact on search? My sites did quite well before the transition to the blog. I would of course still have the tags and categories, but they would be reserved for the Community Blog section.

I'm really struggling with the best mix of how to get this done and keep my site optimized the hilt. What if any things would I be missing if I transitioned back to the Joomla CMS for articles and moved blogs off the frontpage.
